Biodiversity / Outdoor Learning
The education team at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre offer a full range of NI Curriculum linked environmental education programmes delivered by our trained, knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. Also available are a range of talks and guided walks for nursery schools and playgroups. These programmes cater for students of all ages and abilities from primary to university level, and cover issues relating to the environment of Lough Neagh and Oxford Island. The education team also run a dedicated programme which has been designed to help schools make the most of their grounds for biodiversity. It is a longer term programme with a series of monthly visits to the school and involves plenty of practical work for Eco-Committees to get involved.
Energy
The education team can also help target the Eco-Schools energy topic. A dedicated programme looks at the way we use energy in our lives, where it comes from and the resources needed to fuel our lifestyles. It tackles the problem of packaging in our modern world looking at recycling and ways to reduce our energy and resource usage.Water
The education team also deliver a programme that explores how important water is in our everyday lives and the water resources available to us in Northern Ireland. It looks at the range of plants and animals fresh water supports with emphasis on the Lough Neagh ecosystem. The way we use water resources and the threats placed on our rivers and lakes is also examined.
