Ambassador Eco School

What Is an Ambassador Eco-School?

Being an Ambassador Eco-School means your school is a leading example of environmental excellence, with strong pupil leadership, whole-school support, and sustainability fully embedded in school life.

Key Points:

  • You’ve earned the Green Flag at least twice (preferably within 4 years).

  • Your school has changed its culture to prioritise sustainability.

  • You involve students, staff, parents, and the wider community in your eco efforts.

  • The Ambassador role lasts 3 years, but you must still renew your Green Flag every 2 years.

Deadline to apply for 2026 is Friday 3rd April

Essential Criteria:

  • At least 2 Green Flags (ideally back-to-back)

  • Community involvement (e.g. local partnerships or shared projects)

  • Sustainability is part of the curriculum and school life

  • Eco-action is supported by senior leadership and governors

  • You communicate regularly with parents and your community

  • Your school is litter-free

Desirable Criteria:

  • You take part in other Keep NI Beautiful programmes (e.g. Big Spring Clean)

  • You have strong systems for tracking progress

  • You mentor other schools (e.g. joint projects or Eco-Committee meetups)

Role of an Ambassador Eco-School:

  • Be a role model for other Eco-Schools

  • Share your success in case studies, photos, or videos

  • Attend events, present ideas, and mentor other schools

  • Support other Keep NI Beautiful campaigns

  • Receive a plaque and certificate recognising your Ambassador status
